B2C shipping solutions for lifestyle products

In mid-2020, Grieshaber Logistics Group AG took over the handling of the logistics processes for a customer from the lifestyle sector who is active in D - A  - CH. In this business field, the customer develops and sells products related to barbecuing. Sales were given an additional boost by the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Closed restaurants and barbecue areas shifted this popular leisure activity to the home garden or balcony.

Customers are offered a wide range of products from simple charcoal grills and electric grills to outdoor kitchens. A variety of accessories rounds off the entire range. The aim is to provide the customer with a perfect cooking experience.

The challenge in taking on this project was to understand the historically grown structures with the former service provider and to transfer them to Grieshaber. In the process, flexible and scalable structures had to be set up due to the simultaneous upcoming product portfolio change on the part of the customer and the associated very uncertain data basis. In addition to the usual standard in the logistics industry, additional services had to be provided in line with performance, while still guaranteeing fast decision-making processes and a high degree of flexibility. With only a few months of preparation time, the upcoming implementation of this complex project was realised.

Through the formation of project teams on both sides and an open exchange from the very beginning, a basis of trust as well as a high degree of precision within the framework of the structures and areas of responsibility to be created could be established.

In the area of distribution, five segments were formed:

  • Standard parcel shipments without special requirements up to 31 kg
  • Parcel shipments with oversize and overweight
  • General cargo on half and full Euro pallets
  • General cargo on industrial pallets
  • General cargo consignments of sensitive and non-stackable goods

This segmentation was necessary because each consignment had to be considered separately in terms of effective weight, but also in terms of volumetric weight.  The flexible use of the appropriate transport service provider according to the "best-fit principle" was the essential criterion in the decision for Grieshaber.

In addition to distribution, the warehouse services of picking, packing and individual packaging had to be optimally designed. Furthermore, the requirement of same-day dispatch for orders received by 12 noon also had to be implemented.

Thanks to the IT interfaces set up especially for this project, the greatest possible transparency was created for all parties involved. Duplicate entries were eliminated.  Digital information about the ordering process and correct delivery guarantee a high level of customer satisfaction and generate added value. The client receives proof of this through positive evaluations.

With the successful implementation of this project, Grieshaber has succeeded in efficiently solving complexity with high flexibility as well as innovative concepts.
