One year of electric lorries in operation: practical experiences – between progress and challenges
For over a year now, the first fully electric lorry has been an integral part of the Grieshaber Logistics Group AG’s fleet and has, during this time, established itself as a forward-looking and reliable solution for day-to-day transport operations. It was clear even after the first test drives that the switch to electric mobility was an important step for Grieshaber. Driver Andreas Weimar’s first impression was thoroughly positive: ‘Sensational’. The vehicle impressed right from the start with its modern technology, high level of driving comfort and innovative controls.
The wide range of driver assistance systems, such as steering and braking assistants, were unfamiliar to Andreas Weimar at first and required a short settling-in period. However, thanks to targeted training and support from a driving instructor, he was quickly able to familiarise himself with the new functions. This investment in skills development and training has played a key role in making the most of the vehicle’s potential and optimising its handling.
In day-to-day use, the electric lorry impresses above all with its exceptional handling. Its virtually silent operation ensures a quiet and pleasant driving experience, whilst its powerful and smooth acceleration sets new standards. At first, Mr Weimar found the reduced background noise unusual, as ambient sounds are more noticeable. However, this effect is quickly perceived as an advantage. Supported by modern driver-assistance systems, driving is overall much more relaxed and safer; Andreas Weimar particularly highlights the steering assist.

The electric lorry also meets all expectations in terms of reliability. No technical problems have arisen since it was put into service. With a range currently of around 500 kilometres, the vehicle is ideally suited to its intended areas of use. The existing charging infrastructure – particularly in Switzerland – also offers further potential for future optimisations.
Alongside the technical and operational advantages, the sustainability aspect plays a key role. The electric lorry is powered by electricity from renewable energy sources and is therefore CO₂-neutral in operation. At the same time, its energy consumption is around 50 per cent lower than that of a conventional diesel lorry. This underlines not only the environmental but also the economic appeal of electric mobility in freight transport.
The switch to the electric lorry is also having a positive impact on day-to-day workflows. The vehicle is designed to be intuitive to operate, with many functions conveniently controlled via a central touchscreen. Overall, Mr Weimar’s work has become noticeably easier, and his daily driving routine is now much more relaxed.
The electric lorry is also receiving consistently positive feedback from the outside world. Customers and other road users are reacting with great interest and appreciation to the use of a zero-emission and low-noise means of transport. In particular, the growing demand for CO₂-neutral transport solutions confirms that we are on the right strategic track and shows that sustainable logistics is becoming increasingly important.
Against this backdrop, we are consistently pressing ahead with the expansion of our electric mobility programme. Shortly after the introduction of the first vehicle, a second electric lorry was added to the fleet. A third electric lorry will follow this year. In the long term, shuttle services are also set to be electrified.
