New AI-based forecasting tool optimises staff scheduling at Grieshaber Logistics Group AG
Using an AI-based forecasting tool developed in-house, GLG continuously forecasts the expected number of orders and order items for the future for a small number of reference logistics projects.
These forecast order items are automatically imported into the existing staff deployment planning tool (PPT). This further optimises staff deployment planning.
In addition, a so-called target-actual comparison is carried out. If the forecasts deviate by more than 10 per cent from the actual values measured subsequently, this is analysed by the logistics departments and the presumed reason for this deviation is reported back to the IT department. The IT department then assesses the extent to which the forecasting tool can be adjusted to produce even more accurate forecasts in future.
The forecasts are based on a continuous, project-specific analysis of historical order and order line data using artificial intelligence.
The aim is for all future logistics projects to utilise the staff deployment planning tool, which has been enhanced with the forecasting tool. This will make it possible to generate overall forecasts for entire warehouse sections and to carry out optimised staff deployment planning across all projects. Furthermore, the forecasting tool also enables better planning of the required warehouse capacity more effectively.
This provides particular added value for customers whose own systems or processes do not offer sufficient forecasting capabilities. In such cases, the forecasting tool can offer customers a benefit based on existing order and movement data, whilst opening up a digital business model for us.
The results are presented in a clear format, providing a quick overview of expected developments and potential deviations. This enables measures to be taken at an early stage, thereby avoiding bottlenecks or overcapacity.
