With strategic foresight and innovative solutions on the path to a climate-friendly supply chain

The extension in Rheinfelden demonstrates how Grieshaber successfully strikes a balance between energy efficiency, technological progress and maximum operational reliability. A key objective is to achieve continuous improvement in energy efficiency through systematic energy management.

The extension meets the requirements of the DGNB Gold standard, meaning it is characterised by excellent energy efficiency (thanks, among other things, to significantly improved insulation) and performs above average in all relevant sustainability categories. In practice, buildings with DGNB Gold status often achieve consumption levels that are significantly (up to 40%) below the statutory minimum requirements. At the same time, it is important to Grieshaber to achieve a high degree of self-sufficiency (46%) and a high proportion of self-consumption (79%).

Another key component is the solar power strategy: in addition to the existing capacity of around 550 kWp, a further 800 kWp will be installed on the extension. This will be complemented by a battery storage system with a capacity of 1 MWh, which will enable the optimisation of self-consumption and the management of peak loads. For electric mobility, two further electric lorry charging stations, each with two charging points, are also available.

Grieshaber integrates the PV system, battery storage, electric charging stations and heating and cooling systems into a single intelligent system, controlled by a modern energy management system (EMS) that provides maximum transparency via real-time dashboards and optimises operating parameters using AI. For example, electricity demands can be prioritised, charging points intelligently limited, or the battery storage system specifically charged during periods of low electricity prices – based on forecasts of demand, outdoor temperatures, weather and load profiles. A prerequisite for this is an electricity tariff on the spot market. The switch to green electricity has created a climate-neutral infrastructure.

In doing so, Grieshaber demonstrates what a climate-friendly, secure and economical energy infrastructure can look like today, and how innovative technologies and a clear strategy can actively shape the path to a sustainable future.
